Why is breastfeeding considered best?
March 31, 2010
You may have heard that breastfeeding is good for the baby, but are not really sure if it's for you. To help you decide, below are some known benefits to the breastfed baby and to the breastfeeding mother:
- For baby, breastmilk is the ideal food. It is the only food or drink babies need until they are six months old.
- Breastfeeding helps your baby develop a strong immune system to fight off infections.
- Breastfeeding lowers the risk that babies will develop childhood leukemia, type 1 & 2 diabetes, ear infections, respiratory infections and SIDS (Sudden Infant Death Syndrome).
- Breastfeeding your baby can also benefit your health. Breastfeeding lowers a mother’s risk of developing breast cancer, ovarian cancer and type 2 diabetes.
- Besides promoting a strong bond between you and your baby, breastfeeding often saves you money and is convenient because it is always available, fresh and at the right temperature.
- Breastfeeding is something you and your baby can learn together. Contact your local health department for written information on breastfeeding or to talk with a nurse or dietitian about breastfeeding. Breastfeeding peer support groups can also be a good resource for more information and support.
